Oppose HB1129: Urgent Action Required Now
TAKE ACTION NOW, January 27-28, 2014. Please send emails/make phone calls to oppose HB1129, which seeks to eliminate from history textbooks the significant contributions that racial and ethnic minorities have made to the state of Tennessee. The Education Committee meets tomorrow at Noon, so time is short to make our voice heard: please take the time right now to send a message opposing this bill!

"I support our state’s attempts to promote a greater understanding of our American history. However, HB1129 seeks to eliminate the significant contributions that racial and ethnic minorities have made to the state of Tennessee from history textbooks. It deletes (TCA § 49-6-2202) which ensures history textbooks “portray the full range of diversity and achievement of racial and ethnic minorities as well as the role and importance of religion in history.”
In order for our youth to have a wholesome and complete education, it is essential for them to learn about the many diverse faiths, cultures, and civilizations that have contributed to the fabric of our society. Neglecting these historical contributions will be detrimental to comprehensive learning.
Deleting the guidelines sends the wrong message about how Tennessee values diversity. The key to a healthy and free society is a diverse education that recognizes the contributions of all.
